How to Stay Cool on a Job Site, Even at 100°F

Short answer: move the hardest work to the coolest hours, drink a quart of water an hour with electrolytes, wear light wicking layers, take shaded breaks on a schedule instead of waiting for symptoms, and wear cooling gear that runs as long as your shift does. About 8 oz every 15 to 20 minutes, before thirst. Past two hours of sweating, add electrolytes; plain water alone drains sodium. Dark urine at lunch means you lost the morning.

3. Clothing

Light, loose, wicking

Light colors reflect, loose fit ventilates, synthetics or merino move sweat. Cotton soaks and stops cooling you. Long sleeves beat sunscreen you forgot to reapply.

4. Breaks

Scheduled, shaded, paid

Breaks on a work-rest schedule matched to the heat index, in real shade, before symptoms. Waiting for someone to feel bad means the damage is already done.

5. Gear

The question is never "does it cool," it is "for how long, in your humidity." A towel is great for 20 minutes. An evaporative vest is decent until the air is humid or the water is gone.
